History of Lekuresi Castle
Lekuresi Castle was built in the 16th century during the Ottoman occupation of southern Albania. The strategic position — commanding the bay, the approaches from the sea, and the land routes inland — made the hill a natural choice for a defensive fortification. The castle controlled the Corfu Channel at a time when this strait was one of the most contested maritime passages in the Mediterranean, with Venice and the Ottoman Empire competing for dominance of the Adriatic and Ionian trade routes.
