Saranda or Ksamil — Which is Better for Your Albanian Riviera Holiday? (2026)

Last updated: April 2026

This is the Albanian Riviera's most common travel dilemma: do you base yourself in Saranda or Ksamil? Both are on the same stretch of southern Albanian coastline, 14 kilometres apart. Both face the Ionian Sea. But they offer fundamentally different experiences — and the decision matters.

I live and work in Saranda as a hotel owner. I've sent hundreds of guests to Ksamil and heard the same feedback when they return. Here is the honest answer — with no stake in which one you choose. Saranda vs Ksamil — The One-Line Summary

Ksamil wins on beaches. Saranda wins on everything else. The smart move for most travelers is to stay in Saranda and go to Ksamil every day. The 15-minute drive means you lose nothing.

Ksamil: What It Is and What It Isn't

Ksamil is a small Albanian coastal village, 14 kilometres south of Saranda. It has four small islands just offshore that create sheltered lagoon-like swimming areas with extraordinarily clear turquoise water. The beaches — particularly the main Ksamil beach and the island beaches accessible by short boat ride — are genuinely among the most beautiful in Europe. The water clarity, the white sandy seabed, and the warm Ionian temperatures create a swimming experience that surprises most visitors.

What Ksamil is not is a complete holiday destination on its own. The village has grown rapidly to serve summer tourists, but its infrastructure hasn't kept up. Most hotels are small seasonal guesthouses. The restaurant scene, while improving, doesn't come close to Saranda's variety. In July and August, the beaches can be extremely crowded. From October to April, most of Ksamil is closed.

Who should actually stay in Ksamil:

  • Travelers visiting in July–August whose sole priority is beach access with no walking
  • Budget travelers happy with simple guesthouses if it means waking up 100 metres from the water
  • Travelers visiting Butrint who want the closest possible base

Who should stay in Saranda and visit Ksamil as a day trip (most travelers):

  • Anyone who wants quality accommodation, a good dinner, and proper services
  • Travelers visiting in shoulder or low season
  • Anyone who wants to also do Corfu, Gjirokastër, Blue Eye, or other excursions from a central base
  • Families with children who need reliable services nearby

Saranda: More Than a Base

Saranda gets undersold in the Saranda vs Ksamil debate — travelers sometimes treat it purely as a launch pad for Ksamil rather than a destination worth experiencing fully. That's a mistake.

Saranda's lungomare at golden hour, with the bay lit up and Corfu island across the strait, is one of the Mediterranean's great evening promenades. The dining scene is excellent for a city this size — fresh Ionian seafood, Albanian mountain cuisine, cocktail bars with proper views. The hilltop at sunset, from a pool overlooking the entire bay, is a specific travel experience that very few places in Europe can offer at this price point.

The Albanian Riviera is one of Europe's last genuinely affordable Mediterranean destinations. A boutique hotel in Saranda with sea views, breakfast, and a rooftop infinity pool costs a fraction of equivalent accommodation in Croatia or Greece. That value is part of what makes Saranda—not Ksamil—the better base for the full Albanian Riviera experience.

The Best Itinerary: Both

The optimal approach for most travelers is a combination: stay in Saranda, visit Ksamil for the beach, do Butrint and Blue Eye as day trips. Here's how a 4-night itinerary works:

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
Day 1 Arrive Saranda, check in Explore Saranda lungomare + beach Dinner on promenade
Day 2 Ksamil beach (early start) Butrint UNESCO ruins (4km from Ksamil) Sunset at hotel, Observatory Restaurant
Day 3 Blue Eye spring (30 min from Saranda) Return to Ksamil or Mirror Beach Best restaurant in Saranda
Day 4 Corfu ferry day trip (30 min from port) Corfu Old Town (UNESCO) exploration Return ferry, farewell dinner

Frequently Asked Questions — Saranda or Ksamil

Is Saranda or Ksamil better for a holiday?

For most travelers, Saranda is the better base — with Ksamil as a day trip. Saranda has far more and better hotels, 100+ restaurants, year-round services, nightlife, and ferry connections to Corfu. Ksamil has the Albanian Riviera's most beautiful beaches, but very limited accommodation and services. Stay in Saranda, visit Ksamil daily for the beach. The 15-minute drive makes this completely effortless.

How far is Ksamil from Saranda?

Ksamil is 14 kilometres south of Saranda. By car, the drive takes approximately 15 minutes on a well-maintained coastal road. By local furgon minibus, it's 20–25 minutes and costs €1–2 each way. By taxi, approximately €10–15 one way.

Are the beaches better in Saranda or Ksamil?

Ksamil's beaches are significantly better than Saranda's main beach. Ksamil's famous turquoise water and small offshore islands create a swimming environment often compared to the Caribbean. Saranda's main city beach is pleasant but more urban. For the best swimming and beach experience, Ksamil wins. For everything else, Saranda wins.

Is Ksamil worth visiting?

Absolutely — Ksamil is one of the most beautiful coastal spots in Europe. The turquoise water, the small islands you can swim to, the white sandy beach, and the incredible clarity of the Ionian Sea make it genuinely special. It's worth a full day trip from Saranda, and many travelers visit multiple times during a single stay.
