Ksamil: What It Is and What It Isn't
Ksamil is a small Albanian coastal village, 14 kilometres south of Saranda. It has four small islands just offshore that create sheltered lagoon-like swimming areas with extraordinarily clear turquoise water. The beaches — particularly the main Ksamil beach and the island beaches accessible by short boat ride — are genuinely among the most beautiful in Europe. The water clarity, the white sandy seabed, and the warm Ionian temperatures create a swimming experience that surprises most visitors.
What Ksamil is not is a complete holiday destination on its own. The village has grown rapidly to serve summer tourists, but its infrastructure hasn't kept up. Most hotels are small seasonal guesthouses. The restaurant scene, while improving, doesn't come close to Saranda's variety. In July and August, the beaches can be extremely crowded. From October to April, most of Ksamil is closed.

Saranda: More Than a Base
Saranda gets undersold in the Saranda vs Ksamil debate — travelers sometimes treat it purely as a launch pad for Ksamil rather than a destination worth experiencing fully. That's a mistake.
Saranda's lungomare at golden hour, with the bay lit up and Corfu island across the strait, is one of the Mediterranean's great evening promenades. The dining scene is excellent for a city this size — fresh Ionian seafood, Albanian mountain cuisine, cocktail bars with proper views. The hilltop at sunset, from a pool overlooking the entire bay, is a specific travel experience that very few places in Europe can offer at this price point.
The Albanian Riviera is one of Europe's last genuinely affordable Mediterranean destinations. A boutique hotel in Saranda with sea views, breakfast, and a rooftop infinity pool costs a fraction of equivalent accommodation in Croatia or Greece. That value is part of what makes Saranda—not Ksamil—the better base for the full Albanian Riviera experience.
